In São Paulo, the « Girassois » project is a perfect illustration of the synergy between lifting platforms, urban art and sustainable development. Supported by the Virada Sustentável, Latin America’s largest festival dedicated to sustainability, this project saw the installation of four giant recycled plastic sunflowers, a masterpiece signed by artist Eduardo Baum and produced in collaboration with the Mills company.
A monumental installation in the heart of São Paulo
Designed to transform urban space and raise public awareness of renewable energies, this artistic installation stands out for its ingenuity. Thanks to integrated solar panels, the sunflowers capture energy during the day and illuminate at night. « Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these structures embody the potential of solar energy as a clean and efficient solution, » explains André Palhano, founder and director of Virada Sustentável.
The sculptures, inspired by the natural movement of sunflowers in search of light, aim to raise public awareness of the energy transition and the importance of renewable energies in meeting the challenges of climate change. By using recycled materials collected by cooperatives and integrating electric lifting platforms for their installation, the project fully embodies the principles of the circular economy and the reduction of carbon emissions.

An alliance between art and technological innovation

It all began with a meeting between 34-year-old visual artist Eduardo Baum and Mills, a Brazilian pioneer in the rental of aerial work platforms.
« I explored the company’s world and discovered its commitment to the energy transition, notably by replacing thermal equipment with electric platforms. From there came the idea of a tribute to the sun, inspired by the natural movement of sunflowers », says the artist.
This collaboration helped to resolve several technical challenges and optimize the operation of the installations. The teams worked in synergy to ensure a fluid dialogue between the solar panels and the lifting platforms piloted by qualified technicians. The work could be seen until December 1, 2024 in front of Théâtre B32, on avenue Faria Lima, a strategic location where nature and urbanism meet, reinforcing the contrast between innovation and sustainability.

Committed to a sustainable future
More than just a work of art, this project is part of a global approach to environmental and social responsibility.
« Our actions in support of the Virada Sustentável confirm our commitment to sustainability and integrated business practices, reconciling economic growth with respect for the environment, » emphasizes Kleber Racy, Director of Human Resources and ESG at Mills.
The « Girassois » are a concrete illustration of the principles of the circular economy and the accessibility of clean energy.
« This initiative demonstrates the feasibility of sustainable solutions and inspires society to move in this direction, » concludes André Palhano.
With this luminous, poetic installation, Eduardo Baum does more than simply embellish public spaces. He conveys a strong message:
« My works are not in galleries or museums, but in the street, to change people’s outlook. They express my dream of a better world, fairer to nature and to us all. »
